Carvana alternatives: compare buying and selling options
Compare Carvana competitors, direct buyers and private marketplaces by how the transaction works, what to verify and the work you handle yourself.

THE SHORT ANSWER
Carvana alternatives include direct buyers such as CarMax, local dealerships and marketplaces where you find a buyer yourself. The right comparison depends on whether you want a business to buy your car or want to advertise it at your own asking price. For a replacement purchase, compare specific vehicles and complete costs, not just website features.

First decide what you want the website to do
A direct buyer makes its own purchase offer. A marketplace helps you advertise to prospective buyers. An offer-comparison service may connect you with another business. Those are different transactions, even when every website has a sell-my-car button.
CarTruvo is a marketplace for private sellers and dealerships, with its own inventory shown separately. You can also submit a car for purchase consideration by CarTruvo. That review is not an instant offer. This comparison is published by CarTruvo, which has an interest in attracting listings; the alternatives below link to their own service information so you can check their terms.
CarMax: compare an actual business offer
CarMax explains its selling process, including an offer window and verification of vehicle information. Get the current written offer and confirm the applicable handoff, payment and ownership requirements. Compare its net amount with other offers for the same disclosed condition.
A direct offer can reduce the work of finding a buyer. It does not establish what a private buyer will pay, and an estimated private value is not a competing firm offer. Read our CarMax and Carvana comparison for the offer-comparison checklist.
Local dealerships: separate selling from trading
Ask whether the dealer buys your car without requiring you to purchase another one. If you are replacing it, request the replacement price, trade allowance, fees and financing separately. Compare the full transaction rather than the size of a single allowance. Our trade-in hub includes a loan-equity calculator and preparation steps.
Confirm the exact dealership, address and appointment directly before travelling. Avoid assuming a business that advertises used cars will buy every age, mileage or condition.
Cars.com and private marketplaces: compare the listing workflow
Cars.com offers both an offer route and a private-listing route. Check which one you are using, the current listing terms and what assistance is included. Compare eligibility, seller fees, communication tools and responsibility for payment, paperwork and delivery.
With any private marketplace, you still need an accurate listing and a plan for inquiries and closing. More than one listing channel may be useful, but keep the asking price, condition information and availability consistent. Remove or update listings when the vehicle is no longer available.
Where CarTruvo fits
During our free private-listing pilot, you set the asking price and can communicate with interested buyers through your account. Offers are nonbinding expressions of interest. CarTruvo does not guarantee a sale, a higher price, buyer identity or payment. It does not currently act as escrow or book transport.
Choose a private listing if you want to seek your own buyer. Choose purchase consideration if you want the CarTruvo team to review whether your car fits its inventory. Keep those routes separate when comparing them with a direct buyer's offer.
Sites like Carvana for buying a replacement
Compare the actual VIN, condition, location, complete purchase price, inspection access and written warranty or return terms. A marketplace listing does not automatically include the protections or services offered by a particular retailer. Ask the actual seller what applies to that vehicle.
Use our online buying and delivery guide before paying a remote seller. Browse cars for sale by owner if you specifically want a private-seller listing.
Which alternative will pay the most?
No platform wins for every vehicle. Collect current written offers using the same mileage and condition, subtract stated costs and compare those figures with a realistic private-sale scenario. Include the effort and uncertainty you are willing to take on. We do not claim that CarTruvo produces a higher sale price than Carvana or another service.
Use the checklist below to compare routes before deciding. Keep your comparisons together so you can review the costs, responsibilities and actual offers side by side.
