To sell a car privately in Illinois, prepare the title and sale record, complete the required transfer information, remove your plates and submit the seller’s notice of sale. Confirm the current instructions with the Illinois Secretary of State, particularly if a lender, multiple owners or an unusual title situation is involved. Plan payment verification separately from the paperwork.

Start with the Illinois seller instructions

The Illinois Secretary of State’s vehicle buying and selling brochure instructs sellers to provide a properly signed and dated title, complete buyer information, remove their license plates and complete the notice of sale. It also recommends a bill of sale and keeping a copy. Follow the notice instructions even though the buyer has separate transfer responsibilities.

Check names and the VIN against the title before advertising a quick handoff. If a lender is involved, request its payoff and release process. Do not describe a financed car as ready for an immediate title handoff unless you know the actual process. Our loan-sale guide helps organize the lender conversation.

Prepare a listing that reduces avoidable questions

Use the actual city, mileage, trim, asking price and condition. Illinois is a large market, so the buyer needs more than the state name to plan an appointment. Show the car’s actual exterior and interior and disclose known issues without guessing at a mechanical diagnosis.

Gather maintenance receipts, but remove unnecessary personal information before sharing copies. Use our photo checklist and private-sale pricing guide to prepare a useful listing.

Set a payment and appointment plan

Ask your bank how it can help verify the proposed payment method. Schedule around the bank or lender process if needed. A buyer’s screenshot should not determine when the car leaves. See how to accept payment for the verification questions.

Agree on any inspection before the closing appointment. If the buyer identifies an issue, decide whether to change the price, repair it or decline the offer. Update the listing if you learn a material fact that future buyers need.

Complete the records before the keys change hands

  • Check that the vehicle and transaction details match the documents.
  • Complete the title’s required fields accurately rather than leaving the buyer blank.
  • Keep the agreed price and handoff date in a signed sale record.
  • Follow Illinois instructions for your plates and notice of sale.
  • Remove personal belongings and personal data from the vehicle.

The bill of sale guide can help you organize information, but it does not replace official title paperwork. For lost titles, inherited vehicles or ownership disputes, resolve the specific issue through the state before promising delivery.

What if the buyer lives outside Illinois?

Have the buyer confirm their destination state’s registration, title and travel requirements. Do not assume they may drive on your plates. Our interstate seller guide separates seller obligations, buyer preparation and shipping.

Where can I list my car in Illinois?

You can create a CarTruvo listing during the free pilot and discuss the vehicle with interested members. Listing is not a guaranteed sale, and CarTruvo does not provide escrow. Compare other routes using where to sell or trade your car if speed or a firm business offer matters more than managing a private transaction.
