To sell a car to an out-of-state buyer, separate four tasks: verify payment, complete the seller’s transfer requirements, have the buyer confirm destination-state requirements, and agree on pickup or shipping. A signed bill of sale alone does not resolve registration, legal road use or lender payoff. There is no single nationwide checklist that replaces both states’ instructions.

Confirm the destination before promising the handoff

Ask which state the buyer will title and register the vehicle in and whether they plan to drive or ship it. The buyer should check their motor-vehicle agency’s requirements for an out-of-state vehicle. You should check the agency responsible for your current title and any sale-notification requirement.

Direct the buyer to our out-of-state buying guide. Do not promise that they can drive home on your plates or that an ordinary bill of sale acts as a temporary registration. Confirm permits, insurance and plate handling with the appropriate agencies before pickup.

Agree on payment and lender steps first

A distant buyer may propose a transporter or intermediary. That does not change your need to verify the transaction independently. Use the process in accepting payment privately. If the vehicle is financed, involve your lender before arranging release, and confirm how the title will reach the buyer.

Record who pays for shipping separately from the vehicle price. Do not treat an unexplained overpayment as a transport budget you should forward to another person.

Arrange an inspection without confusing it with pickup

A buyer can ask an independent mechanic to inspect the car before committing. Agree on who chooses the shop, who pays, the appointment and whether the car may be driven. An inspection is not authorization for the vehicle to leave with a carrier. Keep the two events separate in your messages.

Provide accurate photos of damage and condition. Our photography guide is useful for a remote buyer because it emphasizes the actual car rather than a polished description alone.

Check the transport company’s role

An auto-transport broker arranges transport; a carrier moves the vehicle. The FMCSA’s automobile-transporter advisory explains the distinction and registration checks. Verify the business you are dealing with and ask about coverage, exclusions, claims, pickup windows and the written price. Registration is not a guarantee of service quality or insurance coverage for every loss.

Before loading, record the vehicle’s condition and review the carrier’s inspection or pickup document. Keep your own copy. A carrier’s bill of lading documents transportation; it is not a substitute for the ownership-transfer documents.

Build a shared handoff list

  • Vehicle VIN, agreed price and both parties’ contact details.
  • Payment-verification and lender instructions.
  • Required title signatures and odometer information.
  • Seller plate and sale-notification steps.
  • Buyer destination requirements and lawful pickup plan.
  • Carrier identity, pickup documentation and condition photos if shipped.

Can CarTruvo guarantee an interstate sale?

No. CarTruvo helps buyers and sellers connect and exchange nonbinding offers; it does not guarantee payment or transport. List your car with its actual city and state, describe the condition accurately, and explain that pickup or shipping arrangements need agreement. Sellers in Illinois, Florida and Arizona can start with the relevant state guide.
