THE SHORT ANSWER
To sell a car on Craigslist, prepare the vehicle information and photos, choose the correct local cars-and-trucks category, set an asking price, publish your listing and arrange buyer meetings carefully. Keep your title and payment plan ready before agreeing to a handoff. You can also maintain a separate CarTruvo listing to give buyers another way to find your car.

Prepare the information buyers need
Write down the year, make, model, trim, mileage, asking price and general location. Describe known faults, warning lights, title status and any outstanding loan accurately. Separate documented maintenance from work you only remember. Use current photographs of your actual car, including damage, the cabin, tires and odometer.
Our car photography checklist and listing description guide help you build one accurate set of materials for every site you use. Do not include an image of your driver's license, title document or home address in the advertisement.
Choose the local category and check the fee
Use Craigslist's posting flow for the area where the car is available. Select the appropriate cars-and-trucks category and identify yourself accurately as an owner or dealer. Enter the requested vehicle details, description and photos, review the preview and follow the site's publication instructions.
Craigslist's official fee page lists a $5 fee for US cars-and-trucks postings by owners at the time of review. Check the current fee before paying. Paying for a listing does not guarantee inquiries or a sale.
Make the asking price explainable
Compare vehicles with similar trim, mileage, condition and location. An active advertisement is an asking price, not proof of a completed sale. Decide privately how much you need to keep after any loan payoff and selling expenses. An unrealistic price cannot be fixed by adding more keywords.
Keep the headline factual. For example, a hypothetical listing might read: 2016 Honda Civic EX, 112,000 miles, service records available. Only use those details if they describe the vehicle you actually own. Avoid unsupported claims such as perfect condition or cheapest anywhere.
Handle inquiries without rushing
Ask which detail the buyer wants to confirm and whether they want to inspect the car. Offer specific appointment windows. Answer reasonable questions consistently, and record any agreed conditions. Use our negotiation guide when an inquiry turns into an offer.
Craigslist recommends local, face-to-face transactions and its mail relay, and warns about verification-code requests, shipping stories and supposed guaranteed payment services. Read its official safety guidance before responding. Do not give a stranger an account security code.
Plan the meeting and payment separately
Choose a suitable public meeting place and confirm test-drive arrangements with your insurer. Do not treat an email, screenshot or visible bank balance as proof that a payment is final. The FTC's warning for online car sellers describes buyers who send an oversized fake check and request a refund. Do not forward an alleged overpayment or pay a buyer's transporter from those funds.
Check the title-transfer, plate and seller-notification requirements in your state before releasing the vehicle. If a lender holds a lien, agree on the process with that lender first. Start with what you need to sell your car.
Can you list on Craigslist and CarTruvo?
You can prepare separate listings using the same accurate vehicle information, subject to each platform's rules. Keep price and availability consistent and close every active advertisement once the sale is complete. More listing locations create additional opportunities to be discovered, but do not guarantee more leads or a faster sale.
CarTruvo is a marketplace connecting sellers with buyers, not a vehicle buyer or dealer. Create a free pilot listing to receive member messages and nonbinding offers. Keep replies and follow-up organized in your account. For a broader plan, use the private car selling guide.
