How to sell a car to Carvana, and what to compare first
Prepare vehicle information, review pickup and payoff details, and compare a Carvana offer with a private listing before committing.

To sell a car to Carvana, start through its official selling page, provide accurate vehicle details, review the offer and requested documents, and arrange an approved handoff if you choose to proceed. Selling to Carvana is a direct business purchase. It is different from listing on CarTruvo or Facebook Marketplace and waiting for an individual buyer.
CarTruvo is not affiliated with Carvana. This guide helps you organize the decision before accepting an offer. Use Carvana’s current instructions and your actual quote for eligibility, timing and payment details.
Prepare a consistent vehicle record
Collect the VIN, current mileage, equipment, ownership information and a factual description of condition. Make a note of damage, modifications, warning lights, missing keys and known mechanical issues. Use the same facts when requesting quotes elsewhere so the comparison is meaningful.
Have records available to answer follow-up questions, but upload sensitive documents only through the verified provider’s official process. A person who contacts you after seeing a private listing does not need your account password, one-time code or bank login.
Read the complete offer before scheduling
Record the amount, expiration, inspection conditions and any deductions. Carvana’s selling overview describes location-dependent pickup, meeting or drop-off options and notes that a pickup charge may apply. Confirm what is actually offered for your ZIP code.
Ask how payment will be made, when it will be issued, and what must happen before funds are available to you. A scheduled appointment and a completed sale are different milestones. Leave enough time for unresolved documents rather than promising to spend the proceeds immediately.
If you have a loan, ask about both payments
There may be a payment to the lender and a separate remaining amount for you. Get a current payoff quote from your lender and ask how the buyer will coordinate the release of its lien. If the offer is below the payoff, identify how you will cover the shortfall before accepting.
Our guide to selling a financed car explains the questions to take to the lender. For a lease, use the lease-sale guide and confirm the permitted buyer with the leasing company. Ownership and permission cannot be inferred from the fact that you drive the vehicle.
Compare the net quote with a private-sale plan
Write three lines: the quoted purchase amount, the deductions you would pay, and the loan payoff. Keep estimated private proceeds on a separate line until there is a credible buyer and agreed terms. A higher advertised asking price does not automatically make a private sale better.
Suppose a hypothetical business quote is $18,000 with $250 of seller costs, leaving $17,750 before payoff. A $19,500 private sale with $700 of seller costs would leave $18,800. The potential difference is $1,050. If the private price falls to $18,000, its net drops to $17,300. These amounts are a worked example, not company offers or expected savings.
Use the downloadable offer worksheet and read CarMax versus Carvana versus a private sale. Include the extra time and uncertainty you are willing to accept, not only the largest headline amount.
Can a private listing run while you consider the quote?
You can plan multiple routes, but honor any agreement you make and keep availability accurate. Do not accept conflicting commitments or deposits. Check each service’s rules before posting and promptly close other listings once the car is sold.
If you use Facebook Marketplace, follow our listing and response checklist. CarTruvo can be an additional car-focused channel with an account inbox, images and non-binding offers. It does not promise a sale before a business quote expires.
Prepare for the handoff you actually booked
Confirm the business identity and appointment through the official account. Gather the items requested for your transaction. Remove personal belongings and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions to disconnect personal accounts and stored information. Check state-specific transfer, plate and seller-reporting requirements with your motor vehicle agency.
Keep a copy of the completed transaction documents and coordinate insurance changes with your insurer. If the final terms differ from what you expected, resolve the difference before releasing the car.
When a CarTruvo listing is worth considering
If you can answer questions, arrange inspections and wait for a buyer, a private listing lets you set an asking price and discuss offers directly. Start a free CarTruvo listing when your facts and sale plan are ready. If you value a simpler direct sale more, compare actual business quotes and choose the one that fits. The selling-options guide puts both approaches side by side.
