Sell my car today: check offers, paperwork and payment timing

Need to sell quickly? Separate an instant quote from a completed sale and check the documents, appointments and payment process that can delay closing.

THE SHORT ANSWER

You may be able to sell your car today if a buyer is ready, your documents are in order and inspection, payment and ownership transfer can be completed. An online offer or a published listing alone does not guarantee that outcome. First decide whether you need an offer today, the vehicle collected today or cleared money available today, because those are different deadlines.

Start with the deadline that actually matters

Write down the latest acceptable date for payment and collection. If you need funds for another purchase, ask your bank about payment availability before committing elsewhere. If the car must leave a parking space today, confirm pickup capacity and what happens if the buyer changes the offer after inspection.

A fast process can be useful, but a rushed decision should still include the net amount, conditions and payment method. Our cash-sale comparison guide helps compare an outright buyer with a private listing.

Check whether the vehicle is ready to transfer

Before traveling or scheduling pickup, gather the ownership records, identification, keys and any information the buyer requires. Confirm whether additional owners must attend or sign. If a lender is involved, ask for the current payoff and the release process. Missing paperwork can prevent a same-day closing even when buyer and seller agree on price.

Use the seller document checklist and the relevant state guide. Do not assume a bill of sale substitutes for all required documents or that one state's procedure applies everywhere.

Contact buyers with the same accurate details

Provide the VIN, mileage, condition, loan status and whether the car can be driven. Disclose known damage before making an appointment. Ask each buyer whether it can inspect and complete the transaction on your schedule, not just whether it can produce an online estimate.

For a dealership, confirm the buying department's availability and required documents. For an online buyer, check appointment and service-area availability. For a private buyer, establish a practical inspection and payment plan. If the car does not run, ask about loading access and transport costs using our nonrunning-car guide.

Ask four timing questions

  • When can the car be inspected, and can that change the offer?
  • When will the required documents be reviewed and signed?
  • What payment method is used, and when can I use the funds?
  • When will collection happen, and who pays for it?

Record the answers rather than relying on advertising language. A confirmed appointment and a written offer with conditions are more useful than a general promise of speed.

Does same-day payment mean same-day available cash?

Not necessarily. CarMax says sellers receive a bank draft at the sale; that is different from receiving physical currency. Carvana explains its appointment payment methods, including processing time for direct deposit. Check the buyer's current terms and your bank's deposit requirements before relying on the funds for another deadline.

For an unfamiliar private buyer, use our payment-verification guide. Do not send back an overpayment or release the car because a message claims funds are on the way.

If you have time to seek a private buyer

You can start a CarTruvo listing today with accurate photos, price and condition details. Publication is subject to review, and creating the listing does not promise same-day approval, inquiries or a sale. Keep other valid offers available while evaluating buyer interest and their expiration dates.

For example, an owner who needs an empty driveway tonight has a different decision from someone who can wait two weeks for a possible private buyer. Both can compare net proceeds, but the first needs confirmed collection while the second can test demand. This is a planning example, not a promised selling timeline.

Make the final decision from facts

Compare the best actual offer with realistic alternatives and your deadline. Keep copies of the agreement and follow the relevant state handoff process. If you choose to continue privately, use pricing guidance, listing troubleshooting and the seller toolkit to improve the listing without sacrificing payment checks.
