How do I trade in my car?

A trade-in applies the agreed value of your current vehicle toward another vehicle purchase. Get the car appraised, confirm any loan payoff, compare the full replacement deal and complete the required transfer with the dealer. CarTruvo helps you compare that choice with a private listing or a request for purchase consideration.

  1. Describe the car accurately, including mileage, title status, maintenance and known issues.
  2. Get written offers and confirm their inspection conditions and expiration dates.
  3. Ask your lender for the current payoff and release instructions if a loan remains.
  4. Separate the replacement price, trade allowance, taxes, fees and loan terms.
  5. Confirm the transfer, payment and old-loan payoff steps before handing over the car.

Which route fits your situation?

Compare responsibilities and uncertainty, not just the advertised number.
OptionWhat you compareWhat to plan for
Dealer trade-inTrade allowance within the complete replacement dealAppraisal, payoff, fees and any confirmed tax treatment
Direct sale to a businessWritten purchase offer after stated costsOffer conditions, inspection, payment and handoff
Private listingPotential proceeds after selling costs and payoffInquiries, appointments and an uncertain final price and timeline

A private sale may produce more proceeds, but it is not guaranteed. A dealer offer may be preferable if convenience or timing matters more. Compare actual offers with realistic private-sale scenarios rather than treating your asking price as money already earned.

Can I trade in my car if I still owe money?

Yes, but the existing loan must be addressed in the transaction. The CFPB explains that rolling negative equity into a replacement loan increases borrowing costs. Confirm where the shortfall appears in the deal and follow up with your lender about payoff.

For example, a hypothetical $16,000 offer against an $18,000 payoff leaves a $2,000 shortfall before other costs. The shortfall does not disappear because a dealer handles the paperwork. Enter your own figures below to compare scenarios.

How can I compare offers fairly?

Give each buyer the same vehicle details and gather quotes close together. Get the replacement price separately. A generous trade allowance can be offset by a higher replacement price, extra fees or expensive financing. Compare the full amount due and loan terms, not only a monthly payment.

Should I repair the car before trading it?

Start with an actual diagnosis and written repair estimate. Compare offers that reflect the current condition with the uncertain increase after repair. Cleaning, complete records and clear photos can help a buyer assess the car, but money spent on repairs does not necessarily return dollar for dollar.

Can I sell instead of buying a replacement?

A standalone sale is different from a trade-in. Ask the business whether its purchase offer requires another purchase. You can also list on CarTruvo during the free pilot and manage inquiries from interested buyers. Keep availability accurate if you commit to a sale elsewhere.

Work through your trade-in plan

Browse cars under $10,000 if you are considering a lower-priced replacement. Asking prices exclude other purchase costs, and selection depends on current listings.

Choose your next step

Create a private listing to seek your own buyer, or submit your car to CarTruvo for review. A request is not an instant offer, and a listing is not a sale commitment.
