How to sell a car in Ohio: paper and electronic titles

Understand Ohio title-office and notarization steps, prepare a private listing and coordinate the handoff with your buyer.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Selling a car in Ohio requires a valid ownership-transfer process as well as a buyer and an agreed price. First establish whether your Ohio title is paper or electronic. Arrange the required signatures and title-office steps before handing over the car.

Start with the correct title office

Ohio BMV's title instructions explain that Clerk of Courts title offices issue titles. For a paper title, the seller completes the assignment on the back and has the required signatures notarized. Check the office's identification and attendance requirements before booking the sale.

For an eligible electronic-title casual sale to an Ohio resident, form BMV 3770 can provide the assignment process. The form is not for dealerships or insurance companies. Ask the title office which route applies; do not treat an electronic title as a lost paper title.

Do the ownership checks before advertising a pickup date

Check the VIN and owner names, then establish whether a lien remains. If the paper title is missing, resolve the duplicate process before promising a same-day transaction. Keep your title agency and lender contacts in your sale plan.

The missing-title trade-in guide distinguishes dealer questions from private-sale preparation. Our loan sale guide helps you plan lender communication.

Price the car and make a useful listing

Compare vehicles with similar mileage, trim and condition. Treat other asking prices as context rather than completed sale evidence. Decide how much negotiation room you are comfortable with, and record known issues plainly.

Use the private-sale pricing guide, then build your description. Photographs should show your actual car, including areas a buyer is likely to inspect. An illustration or stock photograph cannot document its condition.

Coordinate the buyer's next steps

Agree who is coming, how inspection will work and how payment will be verified. Ask the title office about the buyer's application, timing and any special situation. Confirm legal transport, plates and insurance with the appropriate agencies rather than assuming the buyer can drive away immediately.

If the buyer lives elsewhere, use the out-of-state buyer guide. For someone registering in neighboring Michigan or Pennsylvania, our Michigan guide and Pennsylvania guide provide starting points, not substitutes for the receiving agency's instructions.

Compare net proceeds before accepting

Record a dealer's written offer separately from a hoped-for private sale. Include transport, preparation and other seller-paid costs, plus the lender-confirmed payoff. Use the offer comparison board to see the arithmetic without treating it as a vehicle appraisal.

Finish with complete records

Review the buyer, vehicle, price and date across the paperwork. Keep completed copies, remove personal access to the car and update every advertisement after the sale. Use the printable closing checklist to organize tasks.

When your listing and ownership plan are ready, list your car on CarTruvo. Private listings are free during the pilot; buyers and sellers remain responsible for arranging and completing their transaction.
