To sell a car privately in Texas, prepare the ownership documents, advertise the actual condition, agree on payment and complete the transfer with the buyer. Plan your seller notification separately from the buyer's title application. They are different steps.

The paperwork summary below follows TxDMV's buying and selling instructions. Use the agency's current forms and your county tax office for vehicle-specific requirements.

Before listing: check whether the sale can close

Check the VIN and ownership names against the car. Find out whether there is a recorded lien and whether the title is available. If there is a loan, obtain the lender's private-sale instructions, payoff quote and release process before promising a closing date.

If the title is lost, use TxDMV's certified-copy process. Ask about your actual ownership and lien situation rather than assuming a generic bill of sale solves it. Our missing-title guide can help you organize those questions.

Contact the county office in advance for any unusual ownership, out-of-state or title-brand situation. Ask which parties must attend and which supporting records to bring. Save the response with your sale file.

Price and advertise the actual vehicle

Compare similar private-party cars by trim, mileage, condition and title history. A dealer retail advertisement may include services that your private transaction does not. Record advertised prices as comparables, not verified sale proceeds.

Use real photos showing the exterior, cabin, odometer and known flaws. In the description, explain ownership and loan status, available service records, known issues and the general meeting area. Keep ownership documents and personal financial details out of public photos.

For the complete marketing process, read how to sell a car privately. If you use Facebook, the Marketplace guide includes a description template and appointment scripts.

Prepare the Texas transfer documents

TxDMV instructs sellers to give the buyer a properly signed title with the sale date and odometer reading, plus a signed Application for Texas Title and/or Registration, Form 130-U, showing the sale price. Use the current form linked from the agency page and follow its instructions.

Check all details before signing. Compare the buyer's information across the documents, use the true sale price and keep completed copies. Do not sign blank buyer fields or rely on an agreement that someone will insert the right name afterward.

Prepare a transaction record and any additional supporting documents your county office or lender identifies. The general paperwork checklist helps you separate records useful to a buyer from the actual transfer forms.

Make the plate decision before handoff

TxDMV says sellers have the option to remove their plates and registration sticker. Removed plates can be retained or transferred under the agency's rules; plates you do not keep or transfer must be defaced before disposal. Agree on the buyer's lawful transportation plan before removing them.

Do not improvise a temporary tag or assume the buyer can drive away without addressing registration and transit requirements. Have the buyer confirm the applicable option with TxDMV or the county office before the meeting. A late appointment can leave fewer opportunities to resolve a transport problem.

Close with payment and paperwork coordinated

Agree on the payment method before the appointment and ask your own financial institution how to verify it. If a lender is involved, follow its confirmed instructions and make sure the buyer understands when the ownership record can be released.

TxDMV recommends accompanying the buyer to the county tax office. Arrange your meeting around office availability when practical. This creates an opportunity to address document problems while both parties are present instead of discovering them after the vehicle has left.

An original planning example: for a weekday sale, confirm the lender's requirements first, arrange payment verification, then coordinate the county office visit. For a weekend appointment, verify the transport and transfer arrangements ahead of time rather than leaving them to a closed office.

File the seller notification and retain proof

File a Vehicle Transfer Notification promptly. TxDMV states that filing within 30 days protects the seller from parking tickets and toll violations committed by the purchaser. The buyer must title the car within 30 days. Your notification does not complete the buyer's title application.

Keep the confirmation alongside the signed records, buyer contact information and VIN. If later correspondence arrives, use your completed records to explain the transaction through the relevant official channel. Do not assume marking a Facebook listing sold updates the state vehicle record.

Finish your own handoff checklist

Remove personal belongings, paired phones, navigation addresses and connected-car access. Collect toll tags and coordinate insurance changes with your insurer after the transaction. Check that every included key and accessory matches what you advertised.

Mark the vehicle sold on each platform. If you have several advertisements, use your original listing sheet to make sure none remain active. Keep the sale records in secure storage rather than leaving them in the glovebox.

Texas seller questions

Is Form 130-U the same as a seller notification? No. The title application and seller notification serve different purposes. Complete the applicable seller portion of the transfer process and separately file your notification.

Can I promise an immediate sale with a loan? Only promise a timetable you have confirmed with the lender and relevant transfer office. Payment of an agreed price does not by itself establish when a lien will be released.

Can I sell through CarTruvo? You can create a private listing. Buyers and sellers arrange their inspection, payment, transfer and transportation. Submit vehicle information through sell my car if you want CarTruvo to review it instead.

Free tools for preparing your sale

Use the seller toolkit to compare estimated net proceeds, build a factual listing description and print your closing checklist. Your entries stay in the open page and are not submitted to CarTruvo.

You can also download the listing worksheet and closing checklist. These are planning aids. Use your state agency's current forms for the actual ownership transfer.
